Kabhi Khushi
Kabhi Ghum Music
Review
What is common in the movies
that come from the house of Johars, Chopras and
Barjatyas? Case in point being Kuch Kuch Hota
Hai, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Dil To Pagal
Hai, Hum Saath Saath Hai and Hum Aapke Hai Koun!!!
All these flicks have lead characters who are
yuppy (Shahrukh in KKHH, DDLJ and DTPH, Salman
in HAHK), they come from rich and famous
families, they carry traditional values and the
best of all, they think alike, similar tunes
come in their mind at any given situation and
THEY SING SIMILAR SONGS.
The title track by Lata is one 'We are one BIG
happy family' kind of a song. No doubt, it runs
on a tried and a trusted formula of soulful
lyrics and melodious music (by Jatin Lalit) -
the kind of combination that is the backbone of
Chopras, Johars and Barjatyas. Lataji's
rendition of such songs is unquestionable and
the title song in all its versions (main and sad
ones by Lata and Sonu Nigam each) are surely
going to leave a lasting impression. Going by
the beautiful heart warming moments in KKHH -
Karan Johar's debut movie, this song should be
even more touching with visuals.
'Soul of K3G' (instrumental) by Sandesh
Shandilya is a musical piece which conveys
various moods. It is pretty enjoyable too, never
mind the traces of 'Chalte Chalte' from
Mohabbatein in the midst!!! 'Suraj Hua Maddham'
- music Sandesh Shandilya - is a romantic number
sung in low pitch by Sonu Nigam and Alka Yagnik
that has lyrics by Anil Pandey. It's about
confession of first love and makes for good
listening. Especially check out a brief chorus
of 'Tum Paas Aaye' from KKHH and how one gets
nostalgic!!! Remaining numbers are penned by
Sameer.
The best track in the album is undoubtedly 'Bole Chudiyan' which is
composed in the typical family celebration brand
of songs that Jatin-Lalit have been doing for
ages now. Udit Narayan, Sonu Nigam , Amit Kumar
(Oh!! How much we miss him), Kavita K.
Subramaniam and Alka Yagnik sing this one and
all the singers have their heart IN here. The
setup is lavish and EXCELLENT and the lead
players look charming. Dance steps by Director
of Choreography Farah Khan are full of life and
Hrithik too does something different after
shaking his legs in similar style for all his
earlier movies - KNPH, Fiza, Mission Kashmir and
recently Yaadein!!! 'Bole Chudiyan' is a HIT !!!
'Deewana Hai Dekho' settles in 'JUST-AN-AVERAGE'
category. Alka Yagnik and Sonu Nigam pair up
again. Kareena Kapoor too joins the show though
she doesn't sing but utters a few words. 'You
Are My Soniya' (Alka Yagnik, Udit Narayan) is a
funky track that is very unlike those DDLJ and
HAHK kinds. It is more of beats and jazz than
melody and is youthful, probably being
picturised on the younger pair of K3G - Hrithik
and Kareena. Both the numbers are composed by
Sandesh Shandilya.
'Yeh Ladka Hai Allah' - Alka Yagnik , Sonu Nigam
is a predictable marriage song by Jatin Lalit
and in the beginning of the song, Udit Narayan
begins in more or less the same fashion as 'Mehendi
Laga Ke Rakhna' in DDLJ.
Guest music director Aadesh Shrivastava composes (again) a typical Punjabi
celebration dance track. It starts off as a
Bhangra number with the voice of Amitabh
Bachchan and later Sudesh Bhonsle takes over.
Alka Yagnik, Sunidhi Chauhan, Udit Narayan and
Aadesh Shrivastava are the others who join the
fun. It is one safe number that no one can get
bored to listening or watching although it is
not a completely original composition as it
borrows heavily from Big B's earlier chartbuster
'Sona Sona' from Major Saab. But to be fair to
the composer and the team of K3G, one can't
exactly hope the folk tunes of Punjab to be
changed for the sake of originality...isn't it ?
So here we are!!!! Yet another movie arrives
that carries a message of togetherness,
traditions and values of a family set in today's
time. Karan Johar says "It's all about loving
your parents". Simple words but carrying a lot
of meaning. And when you have a rock solid start
cast of Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan,
Shahrukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan, Kareena
Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee, then where can
anything go wrong. No wonder, SONY Music paid an
unheard of price to bag the rights of the music
of Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham -- innovatively
titled K3G!!!
Now after having churned millions of bucks for
such a prestigious product, the million dollar
question that arises is that whether the music
of K3G really justifies the hype surrounding it?
And one can't exactly answer in Black or White
here. This is because if one listens to the
music of K3G keeping in mind the music of the
earlier movies of the same genre, then the
comparison is but obvious - which is NOT EXACTLY
FAIR!!! One can't expect a KKHH or a DDLJ or a
HAHK every time !!! So this way, the hype
surrounding K3G is certainly unjustified. But if
K3G is listened without any Pre-conceived
notion, then it comes across as HIGH QUALITY
product which is far better than some of the
other trash generated today in the name of
music.
