Masti Music
Review
There was a time in the first half
of 90s when Indra Kumar ruled. Starting with a
smash hit 'Dil' which was produced by
Ashok Thakeria, he went on to complete a
hat-trick of successes with 'Beta' and 'Raja'
(both at the box-office and at the music
charts). 'Ishq' was an average grosser
but after that it was a downslide all the way.
The love story on a ship – 'Mann' sank, 'Aashiq'
was hardly noticed, 'Rishtey' came and
went and suddenly there was a need for Inder
Kumar to reinvent himself.
After a brief break, Ashok Thakeria and Inder
Kumar have come back once again with a non-stop
fun movie for which the title speaks for itself
- 'Masti'! Earlier titled 'Khujli'
[the idea which was dropped later], 'Masti' is a
comedy that stars Vivek Oberoi, Aftab Shivdasani,
Ritesh Deshmukh, Amrita Rao, Genelia D'Souza and
Tara Sharma in lead roles whereas Ajay Devgan
and Lara Dutta make special appearances. After a
fiasco called 'Kismat', Anand Raaj Anand
returns to compose with 'Masti' while
Sameer writes.
Masti begins well with a fun track 'Ek
Kunwara Phir Gaya Maara'. A song that is
already popular, it is about a group of friends
who are teasing their friend [who is about to
get married] about the pros and cons of being
married. Rhythm of the song is good that makes
it catchy while the choreography is pleasing as
well. Udit Narayan and Abhijeet sing with lots
of energy while Vivek, Aftab, Ritesh and the
'item girl' dance well with full 'masti'! With
the marriage season on, it won't be surprising
to see the number being played with full volume
on the loud speakers along with the marriage
processions. A number that will be popular for
at least some years to come!
Lara Dutta sizzles again in 'Chori Chori
Chora Chori' after a superb act in 'Aisa
Jadoo' (Khakee)! A song filmed 'on the roof
- in the rain', it is an addition to the rain
songs that Bollywood has been famous since time
immortal. Good thing about the number is that it
resorts from being vulgar! Though the situation
may be perfect for a sensual track, the number
is instead peppy and more of a dance track.
Shaan and Sneha Pant sing this track, which is
fine musically but doesn't have a sustaining
power for being eternally popular.
After the male band in 'Ek Kunwara', it
is the turn of the female brigade to strike back
with 'Saiyaanji Baiyan Chudaake Nahi Jaana'.
This track is about three married women who are
trying to stop their hubbies from falling
wayward and put a brake on their philandering
ways. Just an average time pass track, which is
repeated twice in the album, it is sung by
relatively newcomer female singers - Gayatri
Iyer, Sneha Pant and Meghna Oberoi [Vivek
Oberoi's sister who makes her singing debut]. A
situational track, much is dependent on the way
the song is presented on screen.
Remember the famous words exchanged between seven brothers in 'Satte Pe
Satte' - 'Chain Khuli Ki Main Khuli'?
A song is built in 'Masti' around these words in
the song with the same lyrics. This is the title
track of the movie, which is sung by Udit
Narayan and Shaan. Again a peppy track about
three friends who want to get the best in terms
of women and pleasure, it is somewhat
entertaining and as like 'Saiyaanji', it
will make some impact if packaged well.
Passable!
The album ends on a rather dull note with 'Dil
Ne Diya Hai' sung by Anand Raaj Anand
who is [for some strange reasons] suddenly
interested in getting behind the mike whenever
he sees a chance. A really badly sung song, it
is one of the 'not-so-good' renditions by a
music director heard in recent times. Well, even
Anu Malik has been better! A drag song about the
regret for having strayed away and being
unfaithful to one's loved one, this track
doesn't register any impact whatsoever and one
quickly interrupts the song in the middle
itself. For a change, you feel that the
instrumental of this song [that appears
before the actual track] was much better!
'Masti' is fun, but, mainly in parts. There were
high expectations from the album due to the a
young star-cast, fun theme, Inder Kumar at the
helm and the initial promos, but in the end the
album just settles down to the above average
level. A couple of peppy songs will ensure that
the album is in the running at least till the
movie reaches the theatres.
